How does the cost of an electric bike compare to a car? Bikes
do require maintenance, but it is useful to contrast them with a car.
The following estimate for the bike is based on a generous replacement
schedule and someone who has all work done at a bike shop. For those who
are do-it-yourselfers, a bike is much easier to work on than a car, and
will save considerable cost.
Based on 15 miles a day and 200 days per year:
While the bike is marginally less expensive to maintain, it is not drastically
so. However, the difference is very substantial when it comes to depreciation,
insurance, and parking. Total savings for bike is over $4,000 per year
(not counting gas savings, considered under point 2 above).
This assumes that a bike replaces a car, which we think is much more feasible
with an electric assist bike. |
